Biography

(1937–)

Establishing himself as a controversial Pop artist during the 1960s with his 'furniture' pieces addressing issues of gender and power. In the 1980s his work evolved into more abstract steel sculptures. Sungoddess (1987) and Primavera (2000) are two such sculptures that can be seen at Roche Court. Their flowing forms have a kinetic quality, and seem to display a fusion of the male and the female, a homage to Jones' readings of Nietzsche. Jones addresses the challenge of working with sheet metal as opposed to his paintings, 'In painting, the contour describes the volume whereas in the sculpture the volume, in a way, describes the contour'. In 1986 Jones was made Royal Academician. He has exhibited worldwide, including a large retrospective exhibition in 1979 at the Walker Art Gallery, Liverpool and recent solo shows in Vienna, Cologne and London.
