Biography
(1931–)
Wall, once an assistant to Barbara Hepworth in St Ives, has been settled in the US for over thirty years, where he became one of the first artists to construct abstract sculpture by welding steel. He is often compared to Anthony Caro and David Smith, although his tough and solid sculptures are more delicate and lyrical in form, coated in matt paint. These forms have a High Modernist feel which link back to his roots of St Ives.
Solo exhibitions include Seattle Art Museum and the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art and his work is in many public and private collections including the Tate and the Irish Museum of Modern Art. He is based in San Francisco.
