Biography

The American artist Donald Baechler (born 1956) produces some of the most interesting sculptures of his generation, as well as paintings, drawings and collage. His enormous bronze sculptures such as Scarecrow, pictured here at Roche, very much have the quality of his drawings, with blurred edges and smudges. Baechler's disregard for the distinctions between drawing, painting and sculpture ensures that the way the sculpture looks is almost entirely due to his response to his materials. Scarecrow is a 3.5m high bronze and whether friendly or sinister is a further ambiguity. Donald Baechler has work in public and private collections around the world.
