Biography

(1958-)

One of the most significant artists of his generation, Opie has developed a reductive visual language in which the idea of representation and the means by which images are perceived and understood are investigated. Shahnoza, the dancing girl featured in Opie's recent work, is here captured in black granite. This is Shahnoza in Stone, formed of three pieces, is engraved with her lithe body reclining as her legs kick out and around one another.

Recent exhibitions and projects include Valentina Bonoma, Rome; Kukje Gallery, Seoul; Sakshi Gallery, Mumbai; SCAI the Bathhouse, Tokyo, Patrick De Brock, Knokke, Belgium; INFRA, Royal Opera House, London, DLA Piper Series, Tate, Liverpool; Transparency, National Theatre, Prague; Mi Vida. From Heaven to Hell, Mucsarnok, Budapest. Opie's work can also be found in public collections worldwide.
