Biography

(1949–)

Richard Deacon has enjoyed major success as a British sculptor since graduating from Chelsea College of Art in 1978. In 1987 he was awarded the Turner Prize and ten years later a CBE and became an elected member of the Royal Academy. Deacon has had solo exhibitions at the Serpentine, Whitechapel and Tate in London and in 1999 Tate Liverpool held a major retrospective of his work. His sculptures appear fundamentally abstract, however, they explore via metaphor, human experience and language. His works are ever-resistant to the formulaic, remaining only experimental in nature and increasing in depth and complexity. "One of the few British sculptors of real stature who ranks besides the greats of the past" (Michael Glover, The Times). He represented Wales at the 53rd Venice Bienniale, 2007. Recent shows include Towards a New Laocoon, Henry Moore Institute, Leeds; Personals, Ikon Gallery, Birmingham; Out of Order, Tate St Ives; Masters of the Universe, Doris C. Freedman Plaza, Central Park, New York and The Size Of It, Museum Artium, Vitoria-Gasteiz, Spain (and tour). Deacon regularly collaborates with Bill Woodrow, and their exhibition Lead Astray: New Shared Sculpture is currently touring. In 2007 Richard Deacon exhibited in the gallery at Roche Court with artist David Ward.
