Biography

Sadiq was born in Delhi in 1950 and studied painting at the Delhi College of Art until a traumatic experience left him with such shaking hands that he was unable to hold a paint brush. In their efforts to help his teachers finally sent him to the sculpture department.

In 1975-77 he was awarded a National Cultural Scholarship in Sculpture by the Indian government and rapidly acquired a reputation for excellence. In 1982 he entered the Slade School of Art on a British Council scholarship. This allowed im easy access to the British Museum and its collection of Buddhist and Hindu sculptures and soon became very interested in African sculpture.

Most of Sadiq's sculptures are derived from animal imagery and metaphor, and are all cast in traditional bronze. He was a master craftsman often using obscure methods. Also his love of colour is reflected in his patinas which form an integral part of most of his work. He delineates certain areas for textured patina, polished bronze and colour to juxtapose each effect succcessfully.
