ARIC ATTAS Symbiotic {Holm Oak at Roche Court}
Generative music, plant biodata
8-minute excerpt
2026
Created in collaboration with the Holm Oak trees at Roche Court, Symbiotic {Holm Oak at Roche Court} transforms subtle electrical energy patterns gathered from one of the trees into an infinitely evolving musical composition.
Existing at the intersection of nature, technology, and imagination, the piece brings normally imperceptible living processes within the tree into the realm of music, inviting us to experience the living world in a new way.
ABOUT THE ARTIST
Aric Attas is an interdisciplinary artist creating generative music and immersive sound installations that explore the relationships between nature, technology, and human experience. Using biodata from plants, trees, and environmental systems, he creates evolving compositions that translate processes normally beyond human perception into sound. His site-specific projects have been presented by museums, botanical gardens, sculpture parks, galleries, and public institutions in the United States and United Kingdom, including the Provincetown Art Association and Museum, San Antonio Botanical Garden, and New Art Centre at Roche Court. His music is released by Hearts of Space Records.
At the center of Attas’ practice is a desire to reveal the living world in ways that create opportunities for curiosity, wonder, and connection. His installations invite visitors to slow down, listen, explore, and become more aware of the living systems around them. Audience responses have become an important part of the work: visitors have described experiencing calm, presence, wonder, healing, and a renewed connection with nature. At The Four Seasons, his year-long collaboration with an American Elm at the Provincetown Art Association and Museum, encounters ranged from a seven-year-old who told her father the music made her worries disappear to an eighty-year-old who described the installation as an “oasis of peace” and said the music made him feel like he was an eight-year-old boy again, without a worry in the world.
Through installations in gardens, museums, public spaces, and natural environments, Attas seeks to make contemporary art approachable while creating experiences that connect art, science, and the living world. Technology functions not as the subject of the work, but as a bridge—making hidden natural processes perceptible and creating opportunities for reflection, conversation, and connection across generations.
