Freddy Tuppen
Freddy Tuppen is an artist, designer and maker based in London, working across architecture, furniture and objects. The idea of constraints as possibilities runs throughout his practice. Imposing limitations while leaving room for spontaneity, he is guided by the honesty of humble materials and uncomplicated forms that are rich in detail and spirit. Whether a building, a lamp or a pepper mill, each project draws on decades spent learning, teaching, experimenting and refining, and expresses not only a clear function but the physical experience of making.
Machined from square bars of solid aluminium, his salt and pepper mills are an expression of this guiding philosophy. Turned on a metal lathe and finished by hand, they deliberately carry the marks of their making from tool lines to small variations in form, so that each one is unique to the time and place of its manufacture. Rather than being polished to a flawless surface, they are left open to change his intention being that they continue to register their handling, gathering the marks and imperfections that tell the story of their use. The object is not finished when it leaves the workshop but continues to evolve in the hands of its owner.
