Jo Green is an Artist based in Salisbury. She studied BA (Hons) Three-dimensional design, wood, metal, ceramics and plastics at the University of Brighton (1984-87).
In Green’s most recent work, each unit is part of a series of work that has developed and evolved into more free-flowing structures over the series. The angled shapes, rough textures and surface marks reference the monumentality and construction methods typical of Brutalism, perhaps an attempt to domesticate its nature by bringing it inside.
Green has incorporated a sense of movement in the pieces, as if they have been caught in a motion, each side providing an individual, dynamic view. The building process is very immediate and dictated by the material, the shapes produced during cutting help determine the final form of each piece.
The pieces are made from paper clay, a combination of recycled shredded paper and recycled clay, sometimes this includes different coloured clays which produce random coloured patches. The pieces are biscuit fired to evoke the dry texture of concrete or stone. The works are very porous and so must be handled with care. They should not be exposed to moisture or dirt and can only be cleaned with a dry duster.
