The New Art Centre is pleased to announce that we are showing a large number of paintings by Mary Potter in the Main Gallery from the 18 April. At the same time, a private collection of works by Victor Pasmore from the mid-60s to 70s will be shown in the Artist's House.

Both Potter and Pasmore began their painting careers creating realistic still-lifes and landscapes, although very much in their own quintessential fashion. As their careers progressed, both artists grew away from realism, embracing figurism and abstraction. Pasmore pursued an interest in architecture and the structured form, whereas Potter was far more sensitive to the living world. Whilst Potter maintained the fullness of her canvases, and abstracted the subject-matter she had always painted, Pasmore began to experiment with lyrical abstraction by adding shapes to his landscapes, typically spirals, lines or squares. He then abandoned landscapes entirely to focus on the abstract shapes themselves, favouring a white background to allow his mark-making and the lines of his shapes to be the focus of the piece. The exhibitions will allow for an exploration and comparison of late 20th century art, and the visual language with which these two revolutionary artists helped to shape this period.

We extend a warm welcome to all visitors. If you should like to attend, please let us know by filling in the form below:
