David Murphy is a painter and sculptor who lives and works in Lewisham, London. Having graduated from the Glasgow School of Art in 2006, he won the Newbury Medal for Fine Art, and has completed residencies at The Yorkshire Sculpture Park (2014) and Fornace Mian (2015). His work is exhibited nationally and internationally.

David Murphy's work was displayed in the exhibition GROUNDWORK at the New Art Centre in 2015. In the same year, he became the youngest recipient to be awarded the Kenneth Armitage Foundation Fellowship (2015-2017).

His immersive painting, Deep, Deeper, is suggestively abstract, calling to mind archaic oceans; the mounting chaos of waves are constrained to order by repeated shapes and lines, creating a sense of balance and dimension. The use of casein paint adds elements of texture and depth. The paint is made from a milk protein, which is curdled with lime and pigments for colour, resulting in the velvety, matte finish. Murphy uses a large brush in horizontal strokes to apply the viscous paint to canvas, producing straight lines that feel natural whilst the thickness of the paint gives the impression of depth. This sublime image uses layered space, subdued colour and a minimal narrative to explore psychological depth and emotional introspection, drawing the viewer into a quiet but intense inner experience.
