WORK OF THE WEEK: Jo Green, #4, 2025
#4 is part of a series of work that developed and evolved into more free-flowing structures as the sequence progressed. The angled shapes, rough textures and surface marks reference the monumentality and construction methods typical of Brutalism, although there is perhaps an attempt to domesticate its nature by bringing the sculpture inside.
The sculpture is made from paper clay, a combination of recycled shredded paper and recycled clay, sometimes this includes different coloured clays which produce random coloured patches. The piece was then biscuit fired to evoke the dry texture of concrete or stone.
'I have tried to incorporate a sense of movement in the pieces, as if they have been caught in a motion, each side providing an individual, dynamic view. The building process is very immediate and dictated by the material, the shapes produced during cutting help determine the final form of each piece.' (Jo Green).
